Fears for Australian pilot after Indonesia crash

Grave fears are held for the safety of an Australian pilot, identified as David Cootes, after a light plane crashed in the Indonesian province of Papua yesterday.

The Susi Air aircraft went down shortly after midday, local time, in the province’s remote, jungle-clad central highlands, en route to the village of Kenyam and laden with four drums of diesel fuel and other cargo, according to authorities.

The plane wasn’t located until early evening and the search has been called off until morning due to poor light.

“[The plane’s] condition was smashed but we don’t know the condition of pilot and co-pilot,” said a spokesman for Indonesia’s transport ministry, Bambang Ervan. “Search and Rescue mission and evacuation will continue their work tomorrow morning,”

Susi Air operations officer, Gunanjar Viyandita, identified the two pilots as David Cootes and Thomas Munk.

Mr Viyandita said Mr Cootes is 29 years old and an Australian citizen who has worked for the company since November 2009. Mr Munk is a Slovakian.

There were no passengers.

Many young pilots from Australia and other countries come to Indonesia to work for small airlines to log enough hours to get a job with a major carrier.

There are frequent plane crashes in Papua, where light aircraft ply the routes between towns and far-flung outposts, often in difficult weather conditions.

The Australian embassy has been informed of the accident but could not be reached for comment late yesterday.
