Orwellian ‘Intellistreets’ system now being installed in major cities

Paul Joseph Watson

Tuesday, November 1, 2011

Federally-funded high-tech street lights now being installed in American cities are not only set to aid the DHS in making “security announcements” and acting as talking surveillance cameras, they are also capable of “recording conversations,” bringing the potential privacy threat posed by ‘Intellistreets’ to a whole new level.

In the days after we first brought attention to the privacy concerns surrounding the new street lights, with our story featuring prominently on the Drudge Report website, the company behind them, Illuminating Concepts, went on the defensive, issuing a press release claiming the devices didn’t represent a “big brother” intrusion.

However, as you can see from the video above, ‘Intellistreets’ is big brother on steroids. George Orwell himself would probably have considered the concept too far-fetched to appear in the dystopian classic 1984.

Not only can the street lights, now being rolled out in Detroit, Chicago and Pittsburgh with Department of Energy backing, act as surveillance cameras, Minority Report-style advertising hubs, and Homeland Security alert systems, they are “also capable of recording conversations,” reports ABC 7.

In their press release, the company behind the street lights also denied that they had received DHS funding for the system. In the aftermath of the controversy generated last week, ABC 7 reports that owner Ron Harwood is now “working with Homeland Security” to implement the high tech network, which is connected via a ubiquitous wi-fi system.

Harwood told the Detroit Free Press that the street lights will “make us feel not only safer, but happier,” representing how “business and government can work together for economic, environmental and social benefits.”

Harwood’s claim that the technology doesn’t represent a privacy threat simply because its rollout it “transparent” carries no weight whatsoever. Just because the installation of these street lights is being done publicly and not in secret has no bearing whatsoever on the frightening implications for privacy this development poses.

  • Federally Funded Street Lights Capable of Recording Conversations

The video clip includes creepy footage of the street lights being used to transmit Orwellian security alerts, including “pay attention please….please stand by for a public safety announcement,” and “this is a security alert”. Every “security” announcement you’ve heard in airports and subways can now be brought to steet level.

The street lights can also give audible warnings to individuals, mimicking the talking surveillance cameras in the UK that shout out orders through loudspeakers telling people to pick up litter or leave the area.

“By Spring of next year there is a good chance you could see them pop up in your city,” states the report.

It goes without saying that this is a complete violation of the 4th amendment and represents a whole new level in America’s transformation into a high-tech police state. Not even the most out-there dystopian films featured technology as sophisticated and as potentially invasive as ‘Intellistreets’.

Without any public discourse, without any legal oversight, these systems are now being installed on the streets of America. Citizens already browbeaten into accepting the fact that their every movement can be tracked and traced by surveillance cameras will now be told to accept that the government recording private conversations on the street is a necessary step to provide “safety and security,” as the Homeland Security occupation of America takes on a whole new dimension.

How could they also make us feel ‘happy’ as the owner is quoted as saying? Sounds like a psychological experiment and they plan to transmit signals intended to make us docile.
While our government is being run by mafia criminals, NOTHING they do can be trusted.

  6. Paul needs to re-read the Constitution. His writing clearly shows that he completely misunderstands the content of this document. “It goes without saying that this is a complete violation of the 4th amendment…”

How so? This device constitutes neither a search or seizure. The Supreme Court ruled that a search occurs only when 1) a person expects privacy in the thing searched and 2) society believes that expectation is reasonable in Katz v. United States (1967). Neither of which applies to a street corner, subway station or airport.

The 4th Amendment applies to governmental searches and seizures, but not those done by private citizens or organizations who are not acting on behalf of a government. Just because a company may work with DHS, that does not mean they are also acting on their behalf. The Bill of Rights originally only restricted the power of the federal government. However, in Wolf v. Colorado, the Supreme Court ruled that the 4th Amendment is applicable to state governments by way of the Due Process Clause of the 14th Amendment. Moreover, all state constitutions contain an analogous provision.

Not only that, but the Supreme Court has approved routine warrantless seizures, for example “where there is probable cause to believe that a criminal offense has been or is being committed.” Thus, the reasonableness requirement and the warrant requirement are somewhat different.

The 4th Amendment only protects against unreasonable searches and seizures. If no search or seizure has occurred, the court ends its analysis.

I have to agree. I, personally, think these are great tools however, I am not so blind to think the technology won’t be abused, of course.
Goes along the same lines as paparazzi taking pictures in public. Sorry, you are in “the public”.
Like any thing else; I don’t think guns kill people. People kill people.
These devices won’t remove any rights (you already waived them but, you gotta figure that one out, I’m tired of telling you.).
The only issue I see here is, when they are abused (and they certainly will be) the people need to put the government in its place and exercise control.

I suggest, when these things roll out, the people have dissinformation parties. Get a group to hang around one and talk bull shit. Make drug deals, gun running plans, murder and rape plans, anti-government or what ever else entertains you.
You can certainly use these against the establishment, for your own entertainment.
Besides, they can’t use information they acquire against you. Unless of course, you let them.
Sorry though, they catch you on camera mugging some one, that’s when they can, and should.

“Besides, they can’t use information they acquire against you.”

How long have you been living in America, now? So naive. You can get a ticket just by looking at a cop funny. These cameras make no difference either when it comes that issue. Grow up!

    Chrisballs Reply:

It’s not naivety. I’m not trying to bust your balls but, you can’t get a ticket by looking at a cop wrong. I know (assume) you didn’t mean that literally but, just for example.

To suggest that the “State” or “Gov” has such power, you need to re-address who you think is naive. If you feel that way, then I would guess that you have givin up and will allow what ever happens, to happen.

I’m sure that these devices are for no good but, for right now, a banana is just a banana. If we start demonizing every thing that could possibly be “used against us”,….well, that’s just silly. That’s like saying “terrorism succeeded” and we have to be afraid of every thing.

I don’t live like that; I live in a free country. I am a free man. Unfortunately, there is a cost of constantly defending that. I can’t even consider that a “cost” at this point. Put up your street lights in the name of safety. Sure, I can see it but, abuse them and, we’ll need to explain how the system is supposed to work, as you wonder why the court awarded me your pension.
Funny thing, the way this “government” operates; they accept responsibility for nothing if you misinturpreted their “rules”, that goes both ways, for those who think they are enforcing the rules too.

Now, I’m not all supportive of AJisAbigFATidiot’s views but, we need to look further than our own pretenses.

I’m an American and, I am very well aware that I am the enemy in my own country. I could give two shits less about a smart street lamp. I think it’s pretty cool.

Any one got an Iphone? They are just as dangerous to your freedoms and liberties as this street post but, I guess people can rationalize that away because they have cool apps.
I bet if I could pour a draft out of these posts, people would accept them better, no?

Chrisballs — Yes, he does mean that literally. The Patriot Act even goes as far as to dissolve Habeas Corpus, the Posse Comittatus Act, and the Miranda reading. You can be held indefinately, that’s why the Gitmo thing made the news so much. The cop can ticket you for “looking at him wrong” and then tase you to death, and he won’t get in one lick of trouble.

AJisAbigFATidiot – is a big fat idiot. The street lights that record your converstaion are treason against the USA. He minces words to show that it “doesn’t” violate this or that Amendment when in fact it’s an intrusion of the very worst sort. He’ll never understand; the NWO paid off his mortgage.

    Chrisballs Reply:
    November 1st, 2011 at 3:54 pm

Tom, you need to read the act. Sit with your Black’s Law and read and understand. It has the illusion of dissolving Habeas and Posse but, it doesn’t. The Act is very specific to who is being addressed.
That’s why these people cannot be held on treason against the people, because that Act doesn’t address the people. Neither does the 14th Amendment.

It’s word play. It’s the same “arguement” they will propose against the street lights being constitutional. Just like the Health Care Bill, it is very constitutional but, that is in no way saying it necessarily applies to you. It would be unconstitutional if it wasn’t an option. It most certainly is voluntary. You just need to know how they presume you volunteer and, there are rules if you volunteer.
There in, lies the question; Does this mean YOU?

I’m not arguing with you, you just aren’t seeing it as it really is. These bastards, legally, are not commiting crimes. They are not “forcing” you to do any thing. They ARE enforcing the rules of a game that they presume you WANT to participate in because everything we are set up to do gives them “evidence” that we want to be governed. There’s a lot of rules. Way too many for even them to remember. Oh no, never forget, if they actually FORCE you to do something, then you have treason but, only if they act in an official capacity. Well, that’s out the window too so,…good luck.

I’m always amazed at how some people can only see evil in everything. Metal detectors? Nope, evil. They give cancer. Well what about finding weapons and protecting people? Nope, evil. Nope, infringing on my rights. Ok, well what about these street lights that could warn people in case of emergencies? Nope, evil. DHS will use them to spy on me. Well that seems pessimistic. Nope, infringing on my rights. It’s like a knee jerk reaction without even thinking about the positive uses this and any new technology will have.

I think some people hide behind the Constitution and throw it around whenever they think that they are being oppressed because then anyone who disagrees with them obviously hates America. Just like in Paul’s article, he clearly demonstrates that he has no idea what the 4th Amendment means or what it protects, but that didn’t stop him from just throwing it out there and without a doubt, some people will bite and repeat his very incorrect statement.

I understand what you are trying to say but, it’s off point.
Just because I see some one with a gun, that doesn’t mean he’s a criminal and wants to shoot me BUT, it will be a consideration I may have not had till that moment.

and to AJisA; Not many people understand the Constitution. They all seem to waive it like they have “Constitutional Rights”. The Constitution DOES NOT GIVE OR GRANT YOU RIGHTS. GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEADS!!!!!!!
If you think it does then, you have no rights so, go stand under a lamp post and give confession.

    AJisAbigFATidiot Reply:

Chris…you’re spot on. People hide behind the Constitution and think that anything they perceive as a threat is somehow going against “what the Founders intended.” You don’t have the freedom of speech, but you are protected from being persecuted for SOME of the things you MAY say. I hate to use the tired old “fire in a theatre argument” but it applies. You could go screaming that, but there are consequences. Conversely, no one is going to arrest AJ simply for having his radio show and voicing his opinions.

If people thought OUR government and Congress were screwed up, they’d crap their pants if they could actually see how business was done in 1776.

    Chrisballs Reply:
    November 1st, 2011 at 11:30 am

I’m not sure I follow you. I DO have freedom of speech but, the constitution does not grant that to me. Government, the de facto acting one, is NOT what the document or the founders intended for. “Freedom of Speech” is a binder to the government. It shall not infringe on that right. ANY law created that is repugnant to the Constitution fails on its face, as if it were never drafted at all.
We are a Republic. NOT a democratic society.

..and again…there is NO acting, American government. That’s precisely why they are not accountable to the constitution. It is a private, foreign corporation. They trick you into being an employee of that corp. and, in turn, waive your rights, rights, rights, rights,….scratch….(sorry, broken record).

What I mean is that yes, you COULD say anything you want…nothing is stopping you physically from running into a room and yelling out “I’M GOING TO KILL EVERYONE IN THIS ROOM!” but would you? And if you did, there would be legal consequences. However, there are some people who would argue that the Constitution protects their right to say that…which like you said, it does not.

And if you believe AJ, the U.S. is “recognized globally as the most oppressive police state on earth.” What? Huh? By who?

“You cant get a ticket by looking at a cop wrong”

In theory no you cant but in reality you can be shot in the face when you are 2 feet away from a cop at a protest for no justifiable reason so its not difficult to imagine a scenario where you have increasingly out of control and aggressive and unlawful cops abusing their power routinely where you get ticketed for looking at them wrong and you dont need to imagine it anymore. They beat up and kill homeless people and assault and intimidate elderly women and all the rest of it.All of these things they supposedly cant do but it doesnt seem to stop them doing it.

Well that’s not the smartest thing to do, I’ll admit and, that would upset those people so, they would have a valid complaint but, unless I am hurting some one else or doing something stupid like using the “F” word at an eight year old’s party, NO, there is no legal consequence. You might get punched, and you’ll deserve it but, if you think otherwise, then you are mistaken.

If i am overheard talkin about a fat joint I just enjoyed and then the cops show up, sorry boys, you still have nothing. Besides, for argument, pot isn’t illegal to begin with. The illegality is not paying a tax on it. Then, it is PRESUMED that you did not pay tax on it because you don’t have a tax stamp. The crime isn’t posession. It never was.

What I’m trying to get across, i suppose, is that nothing is what it seems to be. Same with the Patriot Act. That has very key words that tell the tale. They can’t hide it. They just put those definitions elsewhere. It’s pretty apparent that it confuses every one.

One more that’ll fry your minds; it is VERY LEGAL if at a peacefull protest that if the police fire upon you, to fire back. It is ABSOLUTLY LEGAL that if military weapons are deployed against the American People by a police force, that you can shoot back (those sonic weapons). You just need to be sure you are an American People and not a federal employee.
It is VERY LEGAL that if you are arrested without cause, you can resist, even to the point of killing the officer.
I wouldn’t suggest trying this out though, until you understand it and all that it implies.

This has been repeatedly echoed in courts across America, including the Supreme Court.

    Are you serious BIG FAT?…

I would waist my time responding in detail… but I have to ask that question.

I will say this: The U.S. Constitution reeks in its every line and in its totality… of a conviction that government power with malevolently aggregate… become increasingly corrupt… and gradually begin to accrue power from the individual and the States.

The Bill of Rights and the Constitution itself taken as a whole… are an attempt to structure a federal government so that its powers are always secondary to an individual’s Liberty (responsibility/freedom) and beyond that government’s powers to give or to take away.

As for the Supreme Court this and the Supreme Court that… the Supreme Court and the Judicial system was never meant to be equal to the executive or the legislative or to the founding documents basic idea… to mold or to interpret the Constitution let alone alter that Constitution’s basic function of protection an individual’s Liberty. AND the Supreme Court obviously has been infiltrated by the same Banking Cartel/CFR et al. entity that occupies media, the FED and some parts of the CIA and now IS HLS… and many other nexuses of power within the federal bureaucracy.

Most of us hear start with an understanding at least that 911… was a Banking Cartel and their tools… False Flag intelligence operation… so… defending the government’s good intentions is meat to the dragon in these parts… .

The story mentions Katrina… as though a camera on every street corner recording our picture and conversations!!!!@!!!!!!! would have somehow have helped New Orleans… . What is clear about Katrina is that it was a STAND DOWN to allow CFR Bush to be painted with racism so that CFR Barry S. could be brought in to continue with the Cartel’s bailouts/world conquest.

Some here call you naive … no… again I ask… are you serious?

Right down to a language we can all understand; The Constitution binds the government from the people. Easy enough. The only way the government can remove that binding is if they convert the people. They did.
They dissolved the government through bankruptcy, converted “people” into “persons” but, that’s gotta be done voluntarily. They managed that without revealing it.
Then, penned a couple acts declaring “people” as enemies.

Something, evidently you don’t have at this point. You’re right. You are entitled to your opinion. A naive opinion at that. If a company knows it is selling a product to DHS, I don’t think you need to have a rocket science education to know that the company knows that DHS will use it to further monitor everyone. (Hence, acting on their behalf, openly or not) And don’t give me that crap about, “Oh, they are just a business trying to make a profit like everyone else.” While that may be true, there is this two things that they used to teach at school (maybe not yours) that’s called BUSINESS ETHICS and MORALITY which this would completely go against. If we lived in a truely free country and were not so suspicious of the government and what they do, we’d be able to enumerate dozens of ways these things would benefit us.

I guess that’s really my point. We can’t demonize the company that made them. Now, if they add laser tracking, stun units to them, now I have an issue with the company.

“A spoon is just a spoon, until i take your eyes out with it.” Unless it was bought by the DHS, in which case it’s really a fork that has a camera and microphone in it and will record everything you’re doing.

See how crazy that sounds? Kind of like light bulbs that spy on people. Riiiiiiiight.

I dont really see what is brilliant about them or how everyones lives are going to be improved by this technology and its use and misuse because this will all be about misuse.

Everyone got along just fine without these but now they are “brilliant” ??

They record conversations.why would you want to record conversations ??

There is only one reason for that.

Broadcasting security announcements.Yes everyone wants to hear their security announcements.Thats a good thing if you like that sort of thing.

Anyway the argument above is pointless as its obvious why these things are appearing in public and its just one more indication of a society and its govt in decline. These things will be abused and so i dont get the pointless argument of wether they will be or not as its a foregone conclusion.Of course if the situation was different and there wasnt an increasingly oppressive govt in power then these things would not be misused but that isnt the situation and because of that its pointless to talk up how “brilliant” they are hypothetically which doesnt alter the fact they will be misused.

We could talk about how brilliant taser drones would be under a different system but what is the point ??

“WOW !! Amazing technology !!! they could be used for catching criminals and Mexicans crossing the borders and gangbangers !!!”

The fact they will be potentially used against YOU cancels out all of the positive benefits of them.

Its just a side issue that isnt relevent to the topic at all.

Finally there is very very good reason to object to the presence of these streetlights and the reasons why are self evident so there is no maybe about it and on that basis they should be objected to vociferously.

When the next phase of the incremental police state is unrolled then you can either be concerned about it or you can attempt to rationalise it like a lot of the comments above when you still think that it wont be used against you as its just spy camera or a tracking device that is “brilliant” technology. Its only as lampost so dont worry about it but it could be misused but maybe it wont and then if i worry about it i am being irrational as there is still the possibility that they wont be misused.

    Nonsense.

“When we realise that they will be an abused tool for the DHS”

    When will “we” realise ?

Its obvious they will be abused so everyone can realise it right now so need to wait for it to happen before you realise it.

“WOW !!! What a neat bit of technology that is !!! I could think of so many uses for that that could help everyone and make them happy !!!!”

“I wont consider the possibility that this technology will be misused until it happens”

Was there any public consultation before these lights were rolled out ??

Or did they just appear unannounced ??

Sure, If you have a cell phone and, you have a Social Security number attached to that account then, it is presumed by the government that that service was contracted in the capacity of a federal employee and, is under federal jurisdiction, 24/7.

The issue “they” are having is seperating the “employee” from the “private citizen”. It’s a delicate situation and they are constantly working on getting around it.

  7. You know, I am in China right now and have been for a few years and I just noticed that the Chinese government has also just installed these types of cameras on every street corner, too. Believe me, it gives me the creeps. Big Brother is watching…..They never had them before, but now all of a sudden they do. And, gee, golly, whiz. The U.S. government (who wants to so be like China in every way, despite the fact that our U.S. citizens dislike them in every way), definitely seems to be following in their footsteps. However, unlike the U.S. cameras, the Chinese cameras don’t have recording capabilities yet. Half-assed China for ya. At least that’s in a good way. All I see from viewing both sides of the countries is that China wants to become more like the U.S. and the U.S. wants to become more like China. Completely dangerous and it must be stopped at all costs or our world is fucked. Now Europe is trying to get China to bail them out and go bankrupt, but trust me, China is not that stupid. They know that this is what Europe wants and China will not give them money without a return on their investment or risk the same problems they have with the U.S. The Globalists want this, but China doesn’t, which to me is hilarious and I love every minute of it when I hear that China won’t play ball with them. Not that I love China, but compared to the Globalists, I see them as the lesser of two evils at this point. The Chinese are trickier businessmen than any Western businessmen I know. It is almost impossible to outsmart them in negotiations. They are not as dumb as people think. Yeah they sell cheap products but that is because they know how to screw you for your money. I feel the Globalists will meet their match with China as far as trying to screw them. If anyone can beat the Globalists at their own game it’s the Chinese. (As sad as I am to say that) But like they say, “The enemy of my enemy is my friend”. That’s how I view China at this point.

Also in regards to the Chinese cameras in relation to the U.S. cameras, the Chinese cameras DO NOT have speakers or public announcements in them nor do they have LED displays next to them. So…who is more of a police state people? The U.S. or China? Big Brother is watching…I’m scared of my country now.

  8. This is STUPID. We have to pay to maintain THIS? And who wants it? I don’t!

  9. You know the female news reporter in this news clip at the end has a big grin on her face as to imply to everyone that she is happy that Big Brother is watching her. Fuck her! And as the guy in charge of that system looks like a loser at the highest levels. Does he even realize there hasn’t been one terrorist in the U.S. ever and he is saying this will help protect against terrorists? He looks like a paid sheeple. Also, his quote: “As far as privacy concerns on recording are concerned, this is basically transparent for everyone to see and to help them.” Let’s see, what part of PRIVACY do you not understand asshole!!! I don’t want to GET RID of privacy. I WANT MORE PRIVACY!!! That’s the opposite of TRANSPARENT!!!

You know, it’s becoming more clear how stupid law enforcement is these days. Like Alex Jones episode with the border cops. The cop says, “We are not looking for drugs. We are looking for narcotics.” WOW. I’m speechless. Do these law enforcement officers have a brain. How did they ever finish elementary school. Not even high school. Let’s see, DRUGS is the same fucking thing as NARCOTICS!!! WTF!!!??? And now we have another asshole who says, “it doesn’t invade your PRIVACY because it is TRANSPARENT”??? I’m just speechless. Our country is fucked with intelligence like this. That’s all I can say.

How they were told it was.
It took a few years to settle it. I’m not the crazy one. The real crazy ones are in denial. The really sad are the ones who also know “something” is wrong but, they”ll settle for being told it’s them and these meds will help.

  25. Those of you who do not have a problem with these light posts better wake up. If you think these devices will only monitor the area around them think again. With todays technology they will be listening to conversations in your house and monitoring what is going on on your property, who is coming and going. Say the wrong thing inside your home and you might get a visit from HLS or put on a watch list, no fly list or maybe it will trigger them to turn the video cameras on in your new tv or computer to get a closer look. Hell you might even get a notice from your township that you arent cutting your grass often enough or to trim your bushes. Stop drinking the coolaide and talk to your town officials and let them know you do not want these in your town.

If you think about it for a bit, they are really great (although they need solar cells and a back-up battery IMO), I can think of a dozen ways they can be helpful and useful.
My whole thing is; I don’t want to live in fear of a government, constantly second guessing thier intent. Which is where we are at. Has nothing to do with the light posts, really.
They have no right to do what they do and get away with. I am all about stopping that. I’m not going to live in a world where “some one” tells me we can’t use this or do that because it’s evil and the government will use it against us.
It is the same rhetoric we get from the government. It seems we are willing to trade one prison for another.
Who is the “watchdog” here? One way or the other, from both sides, MY rights would be infringed.
I’d like to live in the country where we can say; “Wow, these things are cool and we can use them to help this or that and blah, blah, blah. NOT in a country where you hear “*chirp* we have possible dissent on the corner of 5th and Main. Dispatch a riot crew to apprehend those teenagers and get enforcement over to their parent’s houses and fine them.”.
Don’t worry about the lamp posts. The issue is bigger than that.
This guy might have designed them for Disney. In that application, they’d be great! Of course, I think Disney is evil too but,….that’s another post.
