Flash flood warning for SE Queensland

Torrential rain has triggered flash flood warnings in southeast Queensland.

The state’s bureau of meteorology says a low is developing over the Sunshine Coast and is expected to move in a south to south-easterly direction on Thursday night, causing heavy rain and flash flooding across the southeast corner.

The heaviest downpours so far have fallen between Maroochydore and Caloundra.

Bundilla, south of Maroochydore, and Parrearra Weir, north of Caloundra, have recorded 125mm and 114mm of rain in the last hour.

Rain of up to 150mm over 24 hours is expected across the Sunshine Coast, Moreton Island, Stradbroke Island, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Queensland police say already many Sunshine Coast roads are flooded and are warning motorists to not drive through flooded river crossings.

Meanwhile, tourists have been rescued from the roof of a bus after it became stranded in floodwaters in central Queensland.

The bus, carrying 14 passengers and a driver, became stuck on a flooded roadway at Miriam Vale, south of Gladstone, at around 5am (AEST) on Thursday, police said.

All 15 climbed onto the roof and were picked up by a local boat. They made it to safety without injury.

In a separate incident, a swift water rescue crew saved a man found clinging to a tree in a flooded creek at Yarwun.

Heavy rain and wild winds associated with a monsoonal low pressure system have been plaguing north and central Queensland since early this week.
