Thanks to the Pastor Protection Act passed in the Florida Senate and approved by the House, the sunshine state will now “shield” religious groups from adhering to marriage equality set forth by the US Supreme Court.

Under the new law, pastors cannot be sued or lose their tax-exempt status for refusing to marry a same-sex couple. This essentially makes religious persons and organizations immune from the constitutional laws of this country, but also legalizes discrimination based on a deeply held religious belief.

The law applies to pastors, clergymen and ministers, as well as churches, religious organizations, religious fraternal benefit societies, religious schools, and the integrated auxiliary of a church and individuals employed by such organizations who are acting “in scope of that employment.”

And the wording of the bill allows pastors to opt out of any marriage that conflicts with their religious beliefs, and doesn’t reference same-sex marriage explicitly.

State senator Republican Aaron Bean wrote this bill “because traditional definition of marriage that many held sacred and part of their religious beliefs was turned upside down.”

Anthony Verdugo, executive director of the Christian Family Coalition, praised the new law awaiting Governor Rick Scott’s signature: “People of faith, house of worship and clergy need to be protected against discrimination. You can’t be penalized. You can’t have your tax-exempt status pulled … you can’t have grants denied to you. You can’t be treated any differently than you are now based on your views on marriage.”

Bean is adamant that this legislation needs to be in place to protect Christians who may be sued in the future: “It’s much like taking a flu shot. You don’t know what’s coming down the line.”

The state senator claims “discrimination goes two ways” and that religious people “are scared to death of, this new environment where they can be discriminated against.”
