‘Foreign aid rising Afghan corruption’

In an interview with TOLOnews on Thursday, Richard Stagg said foreign aid has contributed to corruption in the war-ravaged Asian country.

“In some cases we should take some of the blame ourselves as having not spent our own money in a very sensible way,” he said.

His comments come after Afghan President Hamid Karzai accused American and NATO forces of contributing to violence and corruption in his country in an interview with US media outlet NBC last week.

Afghanistan has been recognized as one of the three worst countries in the world in a recent international survey of public sector corruption released by Transparency International.

Earlier this month, Afghan journalist Abdul Hamid Noorzad also told Press TV that the US-led “war on terror” in Afghanistan has led to corruption in the war-torn country as billions of US dollars are paid to the Taliban and US contractors rather than being spent on reconstruction.

The United States invaded Afghanistan in 2001 under the pretext of combating terrorism. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity continues to rise across the country despite the presence of thousands of US-led troops.

The US-led war in Afghanistan, which has caused record-high civilian and military casualties, has become the longest military conflict in US history.
