France to deploy troops to Africa Sahel

France’s Defense Minister says 3,000 soldiers will be deployed to fight militants in Africa’s Sahel region.

French troops will be positioned in the region that consists of northern Mali, Niger and Chad, France’s Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Thursday.

“Our role is to pursue counter-terrorism in north Mali, the north of Niger and in Chad … .We are reorganizing our contingent so that 3,000 French soldiers are in that zone,” he said.

Le Drian says the deployment is without time limit as France was “in the process of ending its frontal war phase” in Mali.

A thousand French soldiers will continue to stay near the Mali town of Gao.

France launched a war in resource-rich Mali on January 2013 under the pretext of halting the advance of militants in the country.

The French-led war on Mali has caused a serious humanitarian crisis in the northern areas of the country and has displaced thousands of people, who now live in deplorable conditions.

Some political analysts believe Mali’s abundant natural resources, including gold and uranium reserves, could be one of the reasons behind the French war.

The Western African country of Niger is mostly desert, located on the eastern border of Mali.

Niger’s Interior Minister Massou-dou Hassoumi said in February that the region has become a breeding ground for terrorism following the invasion of Libya by Western countries.

The Sahel belt of Africa, which stretches from Senegal to Eritrea, is particularly sensitive to drought and famine. Some 10 million people were affected by a severe food crisis in the region in 2010.
