German animal rights groups warn over use of ‘football oracles’

Tierschutzbund has also said that the fad for animal oracles has led to a spate of dogs being abandoned because their owners, apparently, were dissatisfied with their pets’ predicting skills.

Getting it wrong or predicting a result at odds with their owner’s desires can also have fatal consequences for animals.

The German newspaper Die Welt reported the case of Richard the piglet who plumped for an Italian victory over Germany in tomorrow night’s semi-final match. Just hours after his prediction, the paper said, bits of Richard were on display in a butcher’s window.

None of the animals so far have met with the same success of octopus Paul.

The eight-limbed “oracle” made a number of correct choices during the World Cup, selecting mussels from boxes marked with the national flags of the competing teams.
