Gillard, Indon president meet in Darwin

Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono have met in Darwin ahead of bilateral talks.

It is expected the two leaders will talk about how to stop people smuggling into Australia and other issues, in what is the second annual Indonesia-Australia Leaders’ Meeting.

“It’s an important meeting and very, very important that it’s here in Darwin,” Ms Gillard told ABC Radio in Darwin.

“Every day is an important day to be building our relationship with Indonesia. This is of such strategic importance to our two countries.”

Indonesia is an important trade partner, with two-way trade in 2011 valued at $14.8 billion.

The two leaders on Monday toured Australia’s National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre in Darwin, which was established in response to the Bali bombings in 2002.

Executive director of the centre, Len Notaras, said the facility’s response to the terror attacks in Bali has become an international template for handling such medical emergencies.

Dr Notaras said Mr Yudhoyono told him that the regional partnership between Australia and Indonesia needs to continue.

The two leaders will attend a dinner at the NT Parliament House on Monday ahead of bilateral talks on Tuesday.

The president’s visit comes as Australia grapples with ways to deal with people smuggling, which has resulted in frequent boat arrivals this year.

Many of the asylum seeker boats – including one that capsized last week with the deaths of an estimated 90 people – are coming from Indonesia.
