Google Insights trends: Gideon Sundback, Zerg Rush and NFL dominate searches

Over the past week Google users from around the world have been clicking on Google‘s April 24 doodle in honor of Gideon Sundback, inventor of the Zipper, playing with Google‘s “Zerg Rush” Easter egg and looking for news from the NFL draft.

Google‘s Zerg Rush Easter egg, released on April 24, turns users’ search experiences into a video game complete with swarming attacks of letters when they type “Zerg Rush” into the search engine. The third place search term on this week’s charts, “askew,” is also a Google Easter egg, causing Google results to be tilted when users search for the word.

Google‘s new cloud-based collaborative online creation and sharing program Google Drive, released April 24, was also popular, reaching number four in this week’s charts.

Outside of Google-related results, one of the hottest topics over the past seven days was the NFL draft. The US NFL (National Football League) draft is an annual event in which teams select eligible college players. This year’s draft took place from Thursday, April 26, through Saturday, April 28.

The NFL draft accounted for three of the top ten searches with the most significant growth around the world over the past seven days.

Also popular this week was The Avengers, the film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. The film is based on the comic book series of the same name and brings together super heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow to fight evil. It was released across much of Europe and South America and parts of Asia last week.
