Gove and Clegg to replace GCSE

Gove and Clegg are to launch GCSE reforms after coming to a conclusion which could be plausible to both sides of the coalition.

British Education Secretary, who wants to replace GCSEs with tougher exams, believes students in England have been slipping behind high-achieving students of other nations such as Finland and Singapore.

It is likely to remove modular assessment and to replace it with the traditional three-hour long exam in the new plans. Moreover, top grades would only go to the brightest students.

Clegg said: “the reforms would raise standards for all our children”, but he added that it would “not exclude any children”.

GCSEs were first introduced in 1980s to replace harshly graded O-level exams.

The implementation of the reforms has been pushed back until autumn 2015, which means they could be repealed by the incoming Labour Party before they are implemented.
