Greens pressure minister over trawler

The Tasmanian Greens have called on federal Fisheries Minister Joe Ludwig to rule out the super-trawler Margiris fishing in marine reserves.

Fishing groups in Tasmania say the controversial vessel’s operators may be able to exploit a loophole in environmental law.

They say the 142-metre factory ship may be able to fish the Huon and Tasman Fracture marine reserves, where deepwater trawling is banned but mid-water trawling is allowed.

“It is bad enough that there is any contemplation of this vessel being able to plunder 18,000 tonnes of our small pelagic fishery in Australian waters, but it is adding injury to insult should it be able to access the nation’s marine protected areas,” Greens spokesman Paul O’Halloran said in a statement.

Margiris operators Seafish Tasmania responded by saying marine reserves were a matter for the federal government.

The Australian Fisheries Management Authority did not respond to AAP.
