Guinea Bissau president arrested as troops stage coup

But diplomats in the West African country, which has been beset by coups and
has become a major transit point for South American drugs heading for
Europe, said Mr Gomes was the real target of the putsch.

He won close to an outright majority in last month’s first round of voting in
a presidential election. He was widely expected to be elected in a run-off
set for April 29.

“It’s very well known that the army didn’t like Carlos Gomes Junior and he was
about to be elected,” one Bissau-based diplomat, who asked not to be named,
told Reuters.

“So they either had to kill him or make sure he wasn’t elected.” Portuguese
and US officials warned their citizens not to travel to the country, and
those already there to keep a low profile.

Most major roads, government buildings and the state broadcaster remained
under the control of armed troops last night.
