‘Hama massacre, plot against peace’

“There is no question that certain forces, not for the first time, are using the most brutal and vile provocations to undermine the plan of Kofi Annan,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Alexander Lukashevich, told reporters on Thursday, AFP reported.

His remarks came after a new killing of Syrian civilians which occurred in the central village of al-Qubeir in Hama province, on Wednesday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has put the civilian death toll at about 55, down from the foreign-based Syrian National Council’s claims of 100 dead.

The Syrian government also condemned the “heinous crime in Hama,” but stated that only nine people have been killed in the violence, criticizing media reports for “contributing to spilling the blood of Syrians.”

The incident followed the mass killing of about 108 people, mostly women and children, in a two-day massacre that began on May 25 near the town of Houla, in the central province of Homs.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said the new outbreak of violence highlighted the need for the international community to throw its weight behind the Annan plan.

“In the current, very difficult situation, the answer to these provocations must be the consolidation of efforts of the international community to support the plan … and the firm and complete implementation by the Syrian government and the opposition of all points of Annan’s plan,” Lukashevich said.

He further urged “foreign players” to use their influence and pressure the armed opposition groups “whose increased recent activity and calls for outside intervention contradict this plan.”

“This will help prevent a repeat of the tragedies in Houla and Hama.”

Some Western governments blame Damascus for the Houla massacre, but the results of state investigation released on May 31, blame the incident on anti-Damascus armed groups who are making attempts to “bring foreign military intervention against the country in any form and way.”
