Hawke fears for Gough Whitlam after Margaret’s death

“She had, nearly always, a slightly cynical and quizzical grin around the corner of her lips and she needed it with Gough because Gough was very serious,” he said.

“She was a marvelous offset to him. She kept him on the track all the time.

“I love Gough and I’m not being critical of Gough, but occasionally at gatherings he would go on and speak too long and Margaret was the bell ringer. She’d be sitting there next to me and I think, for my benefit to some extent, when he went on too long she’d say ‘Stop, stop, you silly old bugger, time to stop, time to stop.’

“It’s said with great love and affection because they were a marvellous couple.”

The federal government has offered the family a state funeral.
