Housing estate is dwarfed by huge mound of rubbish at nearby tip in Brierley Hill

It’s a problem that has left neighbours rather down in the dumps.

Waste at this urban rubbish tip has grown so tall that it is towering over a nearby housing estate – even dwarfing a four-storey block of flats.

Residents say the eyesore, made up of household waste, industrial refuse and rubble, is a health hazard and is covering their homes in black dust.
Ironically, the offending tip is run by a company aiming to benefit the environment.  Refuse Derived Fuel Ltd shreds and  dries combustible solid waste and turns it into fuel, reducing the amount going to landfill.

Eyesore: The company that runs the tip has already been ordered to scale down the risky rubbish pile, but it has failed to meet five out of seven deadlines to reduce the pile, which towers over homes

RDF has already failed to meet a
succession of deadlines to reduce the size of the waste mountain, which
can be seen from a mile away, saying it needs more time.

But long-suffering residents of
Brierley Hill, near Dudley in the West Midlands, said the pile has
already been there for a year. One woman, who asked not to be named,
said: ‘There have been reports of rats scurrying around. It’s ridiculous
that it is taking so long to get this sorted.’

Another neighbour, builder David
Round, 34, said the piles were blocking out the sunlight. ‘I have to
switch the lights on in my house at times when I shouldn’t because of
the shadow of that massive pile,’ he said.

The Environment Agency was called in
last summer and has repeatedly ordered the company to tackle the
mountain. But David Hudson, of the agency, said compliance had been
‘very poor’.

RDF acknowledged the rubbish was causing a problem, but said it needed ‘more time’ and was being ‘held up by bureaucracy’.

Excuses: The company could be stopped from operating if it does not bring it down in a few weeks, but says it needs more time but residents are complaining it is starting to block light to their homes

Have noted Buckerz of London’s comments. What makes you think that we all claim benifits. Most of the housing is privately owned and hard earned. Maybe you would like it on your own doorstep seeing that you think its ok or maybe you should try to get out a little more!!!

Fine them £100’000 for each day that they don’t comply with the order. They will soon start shifting it.

Try living by it, it stinks and the rats are “big”. Come on Dudley Council do something!!

Real time bomb. One day the methane it produces will go boom…

We older folks often say it wasn’t like that in my day’s, and it’s so true, it really wasn’t, because most of the rubbish is man made packaging for almost everything you buy.
Also most of the rubbish was burned on the fire, but you cant don that now, unless you want to burn your house down by throwing it on the gas fire.

We could always dump it all outside the Scottish Parliament as a gift to Alex Salmond from England.

Estate Agents Details: An up and coming area with marvellous views of surrounding hills. Very convenient location for recycling.

I suspect that no Local Councillors live anywhere near this contemtible eyesore : if they did, they would be doing something about it !

Does it need a lot of rain causing anothet Aberfan disaster before officials enfoce the removal of this mountain of rubbish?

Beats Naples!
