Husband used towball to kill wife: lawyer

A Brisbane man accused of murder bashed his wife in the head with a towball and stabbed her in a botched murder-suicide bid sparked by financial woes, his lawyer says.

Trevor Ernie Zischke, 53, is charged with murdering his wife, who was 55. She was found dead in the bedroom of their Bracken Ridge home in Brisbane’s north on Wednesday.

Zischke sat with his head bowed in the dock during his brief court appearance in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Outside court, his lawyer Adam Magill said Zischke had attacked his wife with a towball from the back of a vehicle and had also stabbed her.

He had planned to then kill himself, Mr Magill said.

The lawyer said his client was only just starting to realise the gravity of his actions.

“He’s both emotionally and physically devastated,” he told reporters.

“It’s a tragic end to a very long relationship.

“The facts are very sketchy at this point in time but it does appear that he did intend to end his own life but just couldn’t get to that stage.

“It’s a very, very brutal ending.”

Mr Magill said he suspected his client was suffering from mental health problems.

Zischke was arrested by police on a roadside at Morayfield less than two hours after his wife’s body was found with extensive head injuries.

The case has been adjourned until June 4. No application for bail was made.
