Illinois House kills audio recording bill

The Illinois House killed a bill Wednesday that would have allowed citizens to make audio recordings of police officers in public places.

Video recordings without sound already are legal in Illinois.

“Citizens are unfortunately being charged under this current law for doing nothing more than what we already do every day, which is to take out our cell phone, open up the camera, and start recording,” said the sponsor of House Bill 3944, Rep. Elaine Nekritz, D-Northbrook,

The bill failed on a 45-59 vote. As a result, Illinois remains a “two-party consent” state when it comes to wiretapping. This means that everyone in a conversation must give their consent if they are to be recorded.

  1. I don’t live in Illinois, but as far as I can tell from what was listed here, could you inform the officer they do not have consent to use their dash cam?

    • Then against the Chicago PD would probably turn it off and beat ya to death

  2. They need to be reminded that they are our servants not our masters. This would of course begin with the judges and juries then the congress of the state. As long as we don’t take action and use the legal system to enforce our constitutional rights against these tyrants it will only continue. Where all of the “constitutional law experts”?

  3. According to the new law that would be legal to state your non-consent.

    • There are so many technicalities with police… 1, a badged officer is illegal in itself and violates the constitution. You wouldn’t let some illegal alien boss you around would you? Same case here. 2, they commit high treason (an executable offense) by betraying constitutional rights. 3, their wages are supposedly tax dollars (and taxes are illegal), so they’re committing thievery. etc etc…

  4. What could one expect from a state allowed criminals gangs like Al Capone to operate at large.

    • With the likes of Rahm Emmanual in their, the criminals are nice and kosher!

  5. Not here AZ, cops try to record without you knowing what they are doing, I was served an order of protection after my younger brother defended himself and kicked the shit out of andrew niliton, when the sheriffs handed me the order, he also started asking provoking questions, at that time, I noticed a little red dot on his shirt pocket. At first I thought he would be shot by someone in my home, but I don’t have any laser sighted weapons, (yet), then I realized the light was from his micro recorder, like the ones you can buy at walmart. So the conversation went to NO SIR from there on out ..

  6. Screw them, record them anyway. It’s impossible to lock up everybody, force there hand, clog up the courts so bad it pukes.

  7. Gee i dont remember giving anyone my consent to be taped in public like if i got pulled over by the pigs,I mean police,The video the police have when they pull you over has audio and video ,I guess next time i get pulled over i would have to tell the office that i dont consent being taped

  8. The insanity of this is past ridiculous!

If my employees can record me (my public servants), then I can record them, it is like DUH!, people!

Any law NOT supporting that is purely criminal and treasonous in nature! The public servants who are failing to represent, support and assist their constituents need to be gone!

    • yepperoo! they work for us,but they must be trained to think the other way around,eh? …and they wonder why we still call ‘em PIGS!
