Almost a month after Labor’s crushing election defeat in Queensland, the party has announced its shadow cabinet.

With only six state Labor politicians left in Queensland, the ALP has its work cut out to cover the portfolios to take on Premier Campbell Newman and the Liberal National Party (LNP).

Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk will oversee Industrial Relations, Education, Training and Employment, Tourism, Small Business, Major events, the Commonwealth Games and the Arts.

Deputy Opposition Leader Tim Mulherin’s duties include State Development, Planning, Racing and Agriculture.

Far north Queensland Labor MP Curtis Pitt is the Leader of Opposition Business, Treasury, Trade and Main Roads.

Among the other key portfolios, Jo-Ann Miller takes on Health, Desley Scott has Child Safety and Transport, while newcomer Bill Byrne has Police, Corrective and Emergency Services.

The Opposition says some positions may be reviewed depending on the outcome of the South Brisbane by-election later this month, after former Labor premier Anna Bligh resigned from Parliament.

Mr Pitt says says balancing his new swag of portfolio responsibilities will be a big task.

He says as Opposition treasury spokesman he will be working to ensure the State Government can fund and deliver its election promises.

Mr Pitt says he is particularly interested in scrutinising the state’s Budget when it is released in September.

“I know that the Newman Government have made a number of extravagant and big ticket promises going into the last election,” he said.

“They’re going to try to deliver on all of those and I want to be there to see how they’re going to do it.

“We had concerns before the election as to how they were going to be able to deliver on these promises and I’m very keen to see what they come up with.”

Mr Pitt says he is up for the challenge of understanding the variety of issues in front of him.

“When you’re in Cabinet, you have to be across not only your own portfolios but others in order to make a real contribution,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to the breadth and depth of the responsibilities that I’ve been given.

“I think they’re things that are well-suited to being in regional Queensland and I’m certainly very pleased to be having the role of shadow treasurer.”
