International Syria Support Group agrees on Ceasefire

nsnbc : Talks held by the International Syria Support Group in Munich, Germany, resulted in the adoption of agreements on humanitarian aid delivery, a political process to end the war and a cessation of hostilities in about one week. Groups designated as terrorist organizations by the UN Security Council will still be targeted.

Sergey Lavrov stressed that the ISSG members committed to the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 2254, including humanitarian aid, the political process and a ceasefire, which excludes organizations designated as terrorist by the UN Security Council.

Lavrov welcomed the outcome of the talks as a basis for the continuation of the Geneva III talks on Syria. The Russian Foreign Minister expressed special concern about terrorist groups’ hindering of humanitarian aid delivery by the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross to the terrorist-besieged Kefraya and al-Fouaa towns in Idleb.

Lavrov noted that a Task Force chaired by both Russia and the United States will meet in Geneva on Friday to help humanitarian organizations comply with their commitments towards the civilians. Lavrov added: “We will work with the Syrian government and the opposition that is communicating with us [for humanitarian access],” and expressed Russia’s expectation that all ISSG members will exercise influence on the opposition to fully cooperate with the UN.

The Task Force will also delineate the territory held by ISIS, Jabhat al-Nusrah and other groups designated as terrorist organizations by the United Nations Security Council.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry stressed that progress was made in the humanitarian aspect and that of cessation of hostilities, adding that this progress can be implemented and followed completely. “We are doing everything in our power diplomatically to bring an end to this conflict,” he added.

No comments were made on the Turkish “wild card”. Turkey has established a refugee camp in Syria’s Aleppo province while NATO member Turkey supports both Turkmen “rebels” as well as Jabhat al-Nusrah and some ISIL brigades in the region. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed concerns about terrorists attempts to destabilize Lebanon and assured Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam that Russia was ready to provide assistance to Lebanon in the spheres where it is needed.
