Iran deal negotiators to brief House Democrats

Politico– House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi will hold a briefing with key negotiators of the Iran nuclear deal just days before President Trump is expected to decertify the Obama-era agreement.

Former Secretary of State John Kerry and former Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz, who spearheaded the negotiations that led to the agreement, will participate in a panel discussion for Democratic lawmakers on Wednesday, according to a notice obtained by POLITICO.

Wendy Sherman, former undersecretary of State for political affairs, Gerard Araud, the French ambassador to the U.S. and David O’Sullivan, the EU’s ambassador to the U.S., will also participate in the member’s only briefing at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Trump has until Oct. 15 to certify that Iran is complying with the nuclear agreement put into place in 2015. The president has long criticized the agreement, which lifted long-time sanctions on Iran in exchange for tougher restrictions and oversight of the country’s nuclear program.

If Trump decertifies Iran’s compliance by the end of the week, which sources close to the president expects he will do, Congress can reimpose sanctions on Tehran using a simple majority vote for the next 60 days.

But it’s not clear if Congress will take any action. Republicans unanimously opposed the Iran deal when it was enacted but now several key GOP lawmakers are wavering on whether the U.S. should reimpose sanctions on Iran should Trump pull out of the agreement.

European allies who helped negotiate the deal, including France, strongly oppose any move to reimpose sanctions against Iran, saying that could fuel international chaos. Iran has warned it might restart its nuclear program if the U.S. reimposes sanctions on the country.

Pelosi (D-Calif.) backed the agreement and engaged in a months-long lobbying campaign to shore up Democratic support for the Iran deal in 2015, a cornerstone of President Barack Obama’s foreign policy agenda.
