Iran expects understanding in P5+1 talks

“All Iran’s nuclear energy activities have so far been based on [international] regulations and under the surveillance of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The Islamic Republic of Iran has remained committed to and fulfilled all its undertakings,” said President Ahmadinejad in a meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on the sidelines of the Rio+20 Summit in Brazil on Wednesday.

He added that negotiations between Iran and the six powers would be a “proper chance” for them to return to the law.

The Iranian chief executive emphasized that Tehran has never sought to build nuclear weapons and has always called for cordial relations among nations and governments.

He stated that arrogant and hegemonic powers should stop their hostility against the Iranian people and other justice-seeking and freedom-seeking nations.

The president pointed to the latest round of talks between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany in the Russian capital of Moscow on June 18-19 and noted that Iran presented “legal, constructive, fair and friendly proposals on ways to resolve issues.”

The UN chief, for his part, praised Iran’s significant role in regional and international developments and said Tehran plays a considerable role in various global issues.

Iran and the P5+1 – Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States plus Germany – wrapped up two days of talks in Moscow on Tuesday.

The Moscow meeting came after two days of negotiations in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, in May.

Tehran and the P5+1 had also held three rounds of talks, one in Geneva, Switzerland, in December 2010, and two in Istanbul, Turkey, in January 2011 and in April 2012.
