Iran, India to build North-South Corridor

Abdol-Ali Saheb-Mohammadi said Friday that the Iranian part of the North-South Corridor, whose construction has begun, starts in Chabahar port city in the south and will continue up to the city of Mashhad.

“We have had negotiations with the Indian side so that they can be involved in building the corridor and Iran has also announced readiness to cooperate with them,” he said.

“Iran and India have common interest in the corridor and we are currently engaged in negotiations in this regard, but have not reached a final conclusion yet,” Saheb-Mohammadi added.

“They are interested in taking part in the pavement phase of the project and operations will begin after negotiations reach a final conclusion,” he said.

On March 11, 2012, Iran Railways director general for investment and international affairs said Indian investors would take part in building a new cargo transit corridor which will first connect the Chabahar port city to city of Zahedan before continuing up to the city of Mashhad.

Abbas Nazari said the corridor would connect Iran to Caspian Sea littoral countries and Afghanistan.

Iran’s North-South Corridor will run from Chabahar to Mashhad over 1,310 kilometers.
