Iran MP slams UN silence on Myanmar

Mohammad Ismaili, a member of the Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, on Friday also criticized international organizations for their silence on the Myanmar violence as “astonishing”.

Stressing that the UN has lost its “efficiency,” the Iranian lawmaker said the UN acted in accord with Western powers, in particular Israel and the US, and has been used as a tool by them.

“The organization, which claims to advocate rights of all people across the globe, takes stance based on interests,” he added.

Ismaili said the UN silence was not a new issue as the international body also failed to meet its obligations when it came to Gaza, Afghanistan and Iraq.

According to recent reports, Muslims in Myanmar are in a tragic human plight. Reports say 650 of the nearly one million Rohingya Muslims have been killed as of June 28 during clashes in the western region of Rakhine. This is while 1,200 others are missing and 80,000 more have been displaced.

The UN has described Rohingya Muslims as one of the most persecuted minorities in the world.

They are deprived of basic rights including education and employment and are subject to forced labor, extortion and other coercive measures.

The government of Myanmar refuses to recognize Rohingyas, who it claims are not natives and classifies them as illegal migrants, although they have lived in the country for generations.
