Iran Navy foils pirate attack

Iranian naval forces foiled the attack, carried out by eight pirate speedboats, on the ship, which was sailing 90 miles (145 kilometers) off India’s Cochin Port, said deputy commander for operations Rear Admiral Seyyed Mahmoud Mousavi on Wednesday.

“The pirates fled the region after their failure [to hijack the ship] and the vessel continued sailing towards its destination in complete safety,” he added.

The Iranian Navy has been multiplying its presence in international waters since last year, deploying vessels to the Indian Ocean and around the Horn of Africa. It also dispatched two ships via the Suez Canal to the Mediterranean for the first time in February 2011.
