Iran urges enhanced ties with Iraq

In a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki in Baghdad on Thursday, Iran’s Justice Minister Morteza Bakhtiari conveyed the Iranian president’s message to the Iraqi premier.

Bakhtiari and Maliki exchanged views on ways to expand the bilateral judicial cooperation, IRIB reported.

The two sides also discussed the issue of Iranian inmates held in Iraqi prisons on charges of illegally entering the country and agreed to look into ways for their release.

The Iranian minister and Iraqi premier also held talks about the finalization of judicial agreements between the two neighbors.

On April 24, Iran’s justice minister and his Iraqi counterpart Hassan al-Shammari signed agreements in Tehran on the extradition of criminals, including provisions for the repatriation of convicts to their country of origin.
