Iran warns of all-out civil war in Syria

Iran’s Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the UN office in Geneva Mohammad-Reza Sajjadi made the remarks during a special session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Friday.

“Smuggling weapons and explosives as well as supplying arms to and financially supporting the Syrian opposition by certain countries will only endanger efforts aimed at [establishing] peace and dialog and will put the Syrian government and nation on the verge of an all-out civil war, which will have dire consequences for the entire region,” Sajjadi said.

He condemned the recent massacre in the Syrian village of Houla, saying such terrorist attacks carried out in the form of suspicious and covert acts, have targeted Syria’s stability and are aimed at forestalling a peaceful solution to the crisis in the country.

The Iranian envoy called for the complete implementation of the six-point peace plan proposed by Kofi Annan, the joint UN and Arab League envoy to Syria, as the best possible solution to end the ongoing violence.

He finally warned the international community against any measure that would overlook or violate Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Annan proposed a six-point plan to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for the resolution of the turmoil in Syria.

The plan, effective from mid-April, calls for the establishment of a cease-fire between the government and the opposition, allowing humanitarian groups to access the population, releasing detainees and starting a political dialogue.

Syria has been the scene of unrest since mid-March 2011 with demonstrations being held both against and in support of President Bashar al-Assad’s government.

The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing protesters, but Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
