Israel to build 10,000 settlement units in Jerusalem

Israeli occupation authorities have unfrozen plans to build 10,000 settlement units north of Jerusalem in the occupied Palestinian territory.

Israeli TV Channel 10 revealed that the Israeli ministry of construction and housing was planning on bringing back a plan to build thousands of homes in the illegal Atarot settlement in East Jerusalem.

The plan was frozen for years due to the opposition of the former American President Barack Obama, who believed that settlements are illegal.

According to the Israeli TV, the plan would be made public on May 23, the day during which Israel marks its annexation of East Jerusalem in 1967.

Israeli newspaper Haaretz said that the new settlement units would be located in an area of Atarot Airport, which has not been in use since 2001, near the Palestinian village of Qalandiya and Qalandiya refugee camp.

Haaretz reported that the new settlement units would be dedicated to housing ultra-Orthodox Jewish Israelis.
