‘Israel violating hunger strikers’ rights’

Tel Aviv-based Physicians for Human Rights said in a statement issued on Sunday that Tel-Aviv’s treatment of four hunger-striking Palestinians is an “ethical failure.”

Ayman Sharawneh, Samer al-Issawi, Jaafar Ezzedine, and Tareq Qaa’dan have gone on hunger strike, one of them for over 200 days, in an effort to demand better conditions including family visitation rights and an end to solitary confinement.

“Physicians (for Human Rights) views with extreme gravity the fact that the rights of the hunger strikers are being violated time and again by various authorities, whose representatives act against the law, regulations, international conventions and medical ethics,” the statement said.

“This is a systemic moral, ethical and professional failure,” it added.

The group said the prisoners are denied visits from independent doctors, and are even handcuffed during hospital checkups.

On Saturday, the European Union voiced concern about the deteriorating health of the Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike in Israeli jails.

It called for Israel’s “full respect of international human rights obligations towards all Palestinian detainees and prisoners.”

On February 12, acting Palestinian Authority chief, Mahmoud Abbas appealed to the international community to intervene in support of the Palestinian prisoners.

“Things may get out of control if the lives of the hunger strikers are not saved,” Abbas said.

“We ask the international community to respond effectively to ease the situation, otherwise it will be impossible to control and it will deteriorate across the Palestinian territories,” Abbas noted.

“These prisoners are on hunger strike in response to the policy of administrative detention and ill-treatment by the occupying authorities,” he added in reference to the Israeli regime.

Administrative detention is a sort of imprisonment without trial or charge that allows Israel to incarcerate Palestinians for up to six months. The detention order can be renewed for indefinite periods of time.
