Rome had recalled its ambassador Friday for “an urgent evaluation” of measures to be taken to “ascertain the truth about the barbaric murder of Guilio Regeni.”

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry called his Italian counterpart to lay out the “scale of cooperation and coordination” of the Egyptian investigative agencies with Italy, and emphasizing that suspending this cooperation on the Italian side and summoning the ambassador “raise questions about the significance of these decisions and whether or not they relate to the issue of cooperation between the investigative teams.”

According to a Thursday statement by Egypt’s Foreign Ministry, Shoukry “expressed his unhappiness at the political orientation taking over the issue, at a time when investigative teams should have room to complete their technical work.”

Egypt recently rejected an Italian request to deliver phone records of millions of phone calls in Dokki, where doctoral student had Regeni resided before his torturous murder, because the action would violate the constitution.
