Jews unite behind push for immigration: “it’s in our strategic interest”

The Jewish magazine Forward reports that Jewish groups are united in supporting immigration reform, which would make citiziens out of tens of millions of illegal, non-European immigrants to the United States.

The U.S. Senate is set to vote on the most comprehensive immigration reform legislation in 27 years. Jewish groups across the country, according to Forward, “are acting together in a way characteristic of the community on few issues besides Israel.”

Robert Gittelson, a retired Jewish businessman and co-founder of Conservatives for Comprehensive Immigration Reform, has called certain Republican strategies on immigration reform “un-biblical” and “cruel.”

Forward says that “those leading an active push for the bill include the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, the American Jewish Committee, the Anti-Defamation League, the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, Bend the Arc and the National Council of Jewish Women.”

It continues to state that “the Senate vote represents the fulfillment of a sustained campaign by the Jewish community for immigration reform, which has built momentum over the past decade.”

Furthermore, the magazine says that the “Jewish establishment” advances its own interests “through alliances and coalitions” because of “rapidly changing demographics”, referring to demographical changes which are calculated to make non-Hispanic whites a minority in the country soon.

“In addition to working with Latino groups, the ADL’s Southwest regional office has forged alliances with Asian groups representing undocumented [illegal] Koreans, Chinese, Filipino and other Asian Pacific immigrants in the Southland.”

Mark Hetfield, president and CEO of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS), says that “it’s in our strategic interest.”

“I really admire the way that the Jewish community has gone deep in support of immigration reform,” Angelica Salas, a 15-year veteran of “immigration rights” activism, told the Forward.

Salas says that HIAS and the AJC have a built-up institutional expertise at integrating new arrivals into American society, with programs, legal resources and family services already in place.

However, even Jews often admit that Jewish organizations are hypocritical on the immigration issue, as they have no problem with Israel being an ethnostate with strict immigration policies, a state which strives to preserve a Jewish majority.
