Karzai lauds Iran role in Afghan security

Speaking in the opening of an international conference on Afghanistan on Thursday, President Karzai thanked “Afghanistan’s neighbors, in particular, the Islamic Republic of Iran, for contributing to the establishment of peace and security in the country.”

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has always maintained brotherly cooperation with Afghanistan,” the Afghan leader said.

He expressed hope that Afghanistan’s neighbors will continue their assistance to the Afghan government in restoring stability and security to the country.

Representatives from 30 regional and trans-regional countries as well as 11 international institutions are participating in the international conference on the future of Afghanistan.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, heading a delegation, arrived in Kabul on Thursday to attend the conference named the “Heart of Asia”.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told reporters on Tuesday that Iran attaches special significance to the establishment of stability and security in Afghanistan.

The Islamic Republic of Iran feels committed to Afghan peace, stability and security, he said.

The US invaded Afghanistan in 2001. Eleven years after the invasion of Afghanistan by US-led forces, the war-ravaged country is still grappling with insecurity despite the presence of about 130,000 US-led foreign troops.
