Kmart Australia says it only started inspecting suppliers’ factories after Bangladesh building collapse

ABC – The retail giant Kmart says it only started building safety checks in Bangladesh after the recent factory collapse that killed more than 1,000 garment workers.  While Kmart did not source any clothing from the stricken factory, it has been under pressure from human rights groups and customers to dump unethical suppliers who put workers in danger.  Kmart Australia’s managing director, Guy Russo, says the retailer will not be abandoning Bangladesh, but has pledged a zero tolerance for unsafe buildings, sweatshop conditions or slave labour.  Mr Russo admits it took the recent deadly factory collapse to make structural building checks standard practice.  ”We were doing all the other safety checks in regards to employment, but the one thing that we weren’t doing were building checks,” he told the ABC’s business editor Peter Ryan.  Read Article
