State Emergency Service (SES) spokesman Lachlan Quick says up to 60 properties in Koo Wee Rup could be inundated.

Many residents have sought shelter at the Cardinia Cultural Centre temporary relief centre in Pakenham.

“I believe there’s been one that’s already been inundated, but I believe that it’s actually a property that has no-one living in it,” he says.

Vicroads eastern region regional director Sebastian Motta says last night’s heavy rains have affected a number of major roads in West and South Gippsland.

For a full list of road closures visit the VicRoads website.

“Anyone who needs to drive on the roads, please take care, avoid any sort of flood situation.”

“Don’t risk it, don’t drive through roads,” Mr Motta says.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued major Flood Warning for the Moe River.

ABC Gippsland’s Mornings host Celine Foenander spoke to Koo Wee Rup resident Ray Brown who was yet to evacuate.

Ray’s property backs onto the main drain.

Last year he and many of his neighbours believed they had been evacuated prematurely when the Bunyip River spilled over into the drains.

But although he is yet to evacuate he says this week’s rain is different.

“I’ve been here for 42 years and I’ve never seen water like yesterday.”
