Unknown gunmen in Yemen have killed a Saudi Arabian border guard and injured another, Saudi news websites report.
According to media reports, the incident took place in the early hours of Monday morning when the guards came under fire from the Yemeni side of the border in the mountainous eastern part of Jizan Province in the southwest.
The border guards are said to have exchanged fire with the armed men.
A Saudi source also confirmed the incident at the border, but did not provide further details.
The deadly incident came a few days after unidentified gunmen shot and killed two other Saudi border guards patrolling the country’s border with Yemen.
The Saudi Interior Ministry spokesman Mansour al-Turki said in a statement released on April 10 that the gunmen opened fire on the guards in Asir Province, next to Jizan, from inside Yemen.
People in northern Yemen, known as the Houthis, scold Saudi Arabia for its support of the Yemeni government.
They accuse Sana’a of discrimination against Yemen’s Shias in collaboration with Riyadh.
For years, Houthis have been fighting the central government in Sana’a. They blame the government for political, economic, and religious marginalization of the country’s Shia community and violating their civil rights.
Saudi Arabia shares a 1,800-kilometer (1,100-mile) border with Yemen.
