‘L. America backs Argentina on Malvinas’

Chavez told a huge gathering of people in Caracas that the Malvinas islands belong not only to Argentina but also to the whole Latin American region.

He also expressed doubts about the continuing relevance of the upcoming Summit of the Americas advising the two participants that strike discordant notes to join others in discussions about key issues including the sovereignty over the islands or forget about the summit.

“If these two governments, the United States and Canada, refuse to discuss issues that are so strongly connected to Latin America and the Caribbean, such as the issue of Cuba … or the issue of Las Malvinas, why have more summits?” he said.

“These summits should be done away with. The Summit of the Americas has no meaning,” he added.

Chavez’s remarks come as Argentine Foreign Minister Hector Timerman said earlier this week that 32 out of 34 participants in the summit support “the sovereign right of Argentina over Las Malvinas.”
