London Olympics torch bearer missing

Nottinghamshire police said an Ethiopian national, 15-year-old Natnael Yemane, disappeared on Friday 29 June as he left his hotel in Nottingham and did not return shortly after his taking part in the Olympic torch relay.

The news comes as the security measures taken for London Olympics are heavily criticized for excessively focusing on potential terrorist attacks while forgetting about other crimes like kidnapping or mugging.

“This is the biggest sporting event in the world, and with that comes the huge responsibility to deliver it safely and securely. It will require a big operation from the U.K. police, supported by the military”, said James Brokenshire, the British government’s minister for crime and security.

13,500 ground troops will be deployed during the sporting event and they will be backed by over 20,000 private guards from private security firm G4S, which has been awarded a contract to secure the Games while standing accused of human rights violations.

With 27 days to go before the London Olympics, Yemane is one of some 8,000 torchbearers carrying the Olympic flame around Britain.
