He may have had five older siblings, but the man
they called The English Giant probably didn’t receive too many hand me
downs as he was growing up.

These 5ft long johns were owned by
27-stone Londoner Frederick Kempster who became known as the tallest
ever Englishman when he was alive at the turn of the 20th century.

There has been some debate over Mr Kempster’s final height with historians only managing to prove that he was at least 7ft 11in tall.

However, the discovery of this huge pair of long johns by John Jardine, of Hurst Green, Clitheroe, Lancashire, adds credence to the theory of Mr Kempster’s granddaughter that he was around the 8ft 4in mark.

The giant who was born in 1889 had a sudden growth spurt at the age of 15 when he had a sudden growth spurt.

He later toured around Europe with a circuses but was taken prisoner in 1914 during the First World War. He was released, however, when the German’s struggled to feed him. He died in 1918 aged just 29.

Mr Clitheroe told the Daily Mirror: ‘My dad got them [the long johns] from
his uncle Tom, who was a friend of Fred Kempster. Tom said Fred had a
real sense of humour – but you’d neeed one when you are that big.’

Mr Kempster had endured a tough childhood. His father Joseph died at age 50 when Fred, the second youngest of seven children was just eight year’s old.

Fred’s mother Jane was left to support him, Susan aged 12, and George aged 2. She struggled to make ends meet by doing housework and laundry and moved her family to a one room apartment in Islington, but she could not earn enough, got behind in the rent and was evicted.
