A 58-year-old man charged with murdering his 55-year-old ex-girlfriend has appeared in a Queensland court.

Ian Hannaford appeared in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Saturday charged with killing former girlfriend Gail Lynch.

He was remanded in custody to reappear in October.

Ms Lynch disappeared from Warwick, southwest of Brisbane, on July 3 and hasn’t been found.

Police charged Hannaford on Friday after he was discovered by a security guard in the toilet blocks of a Toowoomba park a day earlier.

He was treated in hospital for exposure from ‘living rough’ in a large concrete pipe, without any warm clothing and only venturing out at night.

Officers say he was covered in small cuts and barely conscious when he was found.

They say he hadn’t been seen since they questioned him two weeks ago over Ms Lynch’s disappearance.

He was the only person of interest in the murder investigation.
