Malvinas to hold sovereignty referendum

Chairman of the Falklands’ legislative assembly Gavin Short said residents of the island wish to remain subjects of Britain, which illegally occupied the archipelago in 1833 and has since called them the Falklands.

“I have no doubt that the people of the Falklands wish for the islands to remain a self-governing Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom,” Short said.

Short’s announcement comes ahead of the 30th anniversary of the 74-day war between Argentina and Britain over the islands in 1982.

Argentina has repeatedly called on the British government to sit down at the negotiating table to settle the sovereignty dispute but London has refused saying residents of the islands should decide on their future.

This comes as Britain is believed to be supporting the referendum because it has expelled the indigenous people on the Malvinas islands and replaced them with British nationals long ago.

The dispute recently escalated after the news of oil finds off the Malvinas waters and London’s approval of exploration operations in the area.

The islands are thought to hold oil supplies worth tens of billions of pounds.

Argentine Foreign Ministry has described the exploration operations as “illegal” and has sued the five companies involved in the process.

Argentine president Cristina Kirchner is also to attend the next meeting of the UN Decolonization Committee, which considers the islands a colony waiting to be liberated, to push Buenos Aires’s sovereignty over the islands.
