UK Chancellor suggests Greece euro exit

In the recent months, concerns have been growing regarding the eurozone crisis, as the UK Chancellor ponders to whether a Greek exit from the eurozone would help the survival of the Euro.

George Osborne made the remarks that were published on Wednesday in The Times newspaper. “I ultimately don’t know whether Greece needs to leave the euro in order for the euro zone to do the things necessary to make their currency survive,” he said.

Osborne’s comments concluded Greece’s election that appeared widely as a referendum to decide if it should stay in the eurozone or return to its former drachma currency.

Regarding the euro crisis, the British Chancellor had earlier advised the euro zone to reinforce Spain’s troubled banks by using its bailout fund but he then described the deal as “too little, too late”.

Germany is the EU’s largest contributor and has the final decision to whether Europe can be saved from the 2-1/2 year debt turmoil.

Clashes have been made repeatedly between Britain and the European Union over how to solve the crisis as London declines taking part in any eurozone banking union.

There has been a lot of pressure brought onto Britain, due to the fact that the fate of its economy is linked closely to the outcome of the Euro, even though it is not a member of the single currency.

It comes as a Fitch Ratings’ report has warned that a hypothetical Greek exit from the single European currency would have “limited, direct, cross-border impact on neighbouring countries” but a “severe indirect impact” throughout the eurozone countries, particularly Spain and Italy.

A robust response from policymakers would be required to prevent contagion, and Fitch would expect a strong public statement of commitment by the ECB and eurozone policymakers to provide support, if required. Furthermore, this statement would need to be backed up by specific policy actions.
