Man dies after crashing stolen car

Police are investigating whether a man who died in a car accident on the NSW north coast had earlier broken into a home and stolen a vehicle.

A man died after the car he was driving crashed into a tree near Taree about 11.30am on Saturday.

Police had earlier been called to a property in Smiths Lake after a man allegedly broke into a residence and stole a Mazda 3.

The Mazda was later spotted by police driving in the area.

Police say when the man spotted police the car sped off at high speed before crashing into a tree.

Ambulance officers attended the scene but the man died shortly after noon.

Police are investigating the incident and anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
