A MAN has died in hospital following a shooting in Preston yesterday.

Police said the 35-year-old was shot at 11.40am after briefly arguing with the shooter in the driveway of his home in Ambon St, Preston.

The Preston man was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital where he later died around 6.15pm.

Several members of the victim’s family were in the house at the time of the shooting.

Inspector David Watt said the victim was known to police.

They are yet to release a description of the offender or determine what kind of gun was used or how the shooter fled the scene.

“There was an argument that occurred in the driveway, it was only a very short argument and one shot was heard after that,” Inspector Watt said.

“At this stage we don’t have any information over what might have prompted it.

“The person who lives there is known to us, but I can’t go into any more details in relation to that at the moment. It’s early days … we will be talking to friends and relatives, to neighbours and conducting extensive inquires in order to identify the offender.”

Neighbours said the street was a constant source of trouble.

In October, police questioned a 40-year-old man after the body of a woman was found in a house blaze in the same street.

“There is always something happening in there, I don’t walk down there at night,” a woman who lives in the neighbourhood said.

“It’s drugs. The police are always there. They need to take these people out of here.”

Another neighbour who lives several houses down from where the shooting occurred said he wasn’t surprised by it.

“Hopefully, I won’t be living here for too much longer,” he said.
