Man reported bushfire he started: police

A man deliberately lit a bushfire in the Blue Mountains of NSW, then called triple zero from a payphone, police allege.

Police arrested the 34-year-old near his Katoomba home at 8.30am (AEDT) on Thursday in connection with a blaze that spread through Katoomba and Leura on October 24.

The fire damaged several homes and forced the evacuation of about 450 students from Katoomba High School.

It destroyed 19 hectares of bush and was not contained for 24 hours.

Detectives expect to charge the man later on Thursday night.

“Thankfully we didn’t lose any life during that bushfire but it had the potential to be catastrophic,” Acting Superintendent Rob Vellar said.

“We will be alleging this man made the triple 0 call from a payphone after the fire was started.”

Acting Supt Vellar said a combination of forensic evidence and tip-offs from witnesses led to Thursday’s arrest.

He said the man had no connection to bushfires deliberately lit last September between Wentworth Falls and Katoomba.

Two Katoomba boys, aged 17 and 13, have been charged with arson over that fire.

Acting Supt Vellar also raised concerns about other bushfires being deliberately lit this summer and urged Blue Mountains residents to be vigilant about reporting suspicious behaviour.

“It’s only a matter of time before somebody else performs a stupid act of deliberately lighting a bushfire,” he said.
