Melbourne by-election on July 21

Melbourne voters will go to the polls in July to elect a new state MP to replace Labor veteran Bronwyn Pike.

The by-election for the seat of Melbourne will be held on July 21, Speaker Ken Smith announced on Tuesday

Ms Pike, who was Victoria’s longest serving female minister, quit politics earlier this month, saying her departure would give the Labor Party a chance for renewal.

She retained the seat by 6.1 per cent at the 2010 state election, despite a threat from the Greens.

Melbourne City councillors Cathy Oke and Jennifer Kanis will face off for the seat.

Ms Kanis, a lawyer with legal firm Holding Redlich, is Labor’s candidate, while Ms Oke, who runs education program Kids Teaching Kids, will represent the Greens.

The coalition is yet to announce whether it will field a candidate.

Ms Pike has held Melbourne since September 1999.
