Independent senator Nick Xenophon wants the Qantas Sale Act tightened following the carrier’s decision to slash 500 jobs.
The laws were introduced when Qantas was privatised in 1992 to ensure international services remained Australia-based but they do not legally prevent Australian operations being replaced with foreign subsidiaries.
Senator Xenophon says the latest round of Qantas job cuts, linked to the restructure of heavy maintenance facilities in Victoria and Queensland, demonstrates how weak were the laws.
“It doesn’t provide a protection to Australian jobs,” he told reporters in Canberra.
“The spirit of the Qantas Sale Act 1992 has been completely trashed by the current management and it needs to be changed.”
