Mexican reporter found dead in his car

The Morelos Attorney General’s Office said that the journalist’s face was covered with a large kerchief in his own car in a neighborhood in Cuernavaca, the capital of the central state of Morelos, located about 90 kilometers from Mexico City, adding that “there were apparently no wounds from firearms,” Reuters reported on Monday.

The vehicle “did not have any impacts from firearms, nor traces of blood or signs of violence in its interior or exterior,” the office stated, adding that Orta Salgado’s relatives identified his body and an autopsy will be carried out to determine the cause of death.

Mario Vazquez Rojas, the interim attorney general of Morelos, said, “The Attorney General’s office will continue pushing for a thorough investigation of the acts, until we can clarify this crime as quickly as possible, and will be looking into each line of investigation, including those related to his activities as a journalist.”

Local media reported that the body of Orta Salgado had been beaten, stabbed, and asphyxiated, but showed no signs of gunshot wounds.

Last December, Orta Salgado, 43, organized a group to help elect Institutional Revolutionary Party presidential candidate Enrique Pena Nieto, media reports said.

Two other attacks on journalists and media outlets were reported over the past few days.

Mexico’s National Human Rights Commission says attacks on journalists “are systematic in Mexico” and the issue gets little attention, with inadequate justice in cases involving attacks or abuses of power against journalists.
