Michael A. Hoffman examines the critical issues of free speech, truth and lies in history, and the Orwellian concept of “groupthink,” a type of thought within a deeply cohesive in-group whose members try to minimize conflict and reach consensus without critically testing, analyzing, and evaluating ideas. It is a second potential negative consequence of group cohesion. The importance of academic freedom and language in the context of revisionist history are also discussed.
