Mine flood ‘no threat to Vic power supply’

Victoria’s energy supply is not under threat despite the second flood this month at the coalmine that supplies a key power station, the government says.

Victoria’s Energy and Resources Minister Michael O’Brien assured the public on Friday that even if the Yallourn power station shuts down completely the state’s energy supply will be secure.

“We’ve got enough excess capacity in the system to ensure we can keep the lights on,” Mr O’Brien said.

“There is some fat that’s been built into the system.”

The Yallourn power station supplies up to a quarter of Victoria’s energy.

Operators TRUenergy shut down one of its generators on Friday, leaving one of its four units operating, to preserve coal supplies.

It currently has about 80 hours worth of coal stockpiled.

A coal conveyor was turned off on June 6 after heavy rain caused flooding in the mine.

A main conveyor and a second generator came back online earlier this week but a TRUenergy spokesman said heavy rain in the region had hindered work on mine recovery.

On Friday the conveyor and a second unit were again switched off.

“We’re not coaling at the moment but we will resume as soon as the weather permits trucking etc,” a spokesman told AAP.

“There’s plenty of spare capacity available.”

The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) said Victoria’s energy supply was secure.

“Electricity supply of Victoria is not under threat, despite the current inclement weather slowing the restoration efforts of the operator at Yallourn open-cut coalmine and adjoining power station,” AEMO chief executive Matt Zema said.

The opposition has called on the government to guarantee the security of Victoria’s energy.

Its energy spokeswoman, Lily D’Ambrosio, said the Baillieu government should be facilitating agreements between major energy consumers and suppliers to prepare for the possibility of energy shortages.
