Awake Goy The main Syria opposition coalition, the so-called High Negotiations Committee (HNC), says it will not attend a planned meeting with the United Nations special envoy for Syria.
“There is no meeting with (Staffan) de Mistura,” planned for Tuesday afternoon, HNC member Farah Atassi told reporters outside of the UN headquarters in the Swiss city of Geneva, where the Syria peace talks are going on.
“We presented the demands that we wanted to demand. At this moment, there is no reason to repeat ourselves with de Mistura,” she added.
The gathering was to be the opposition delegation’s second meeting with the Swedish-Italian diplomat as part of the UN-brokered peace Geneva negotiations aimed at finding a political solution to the conflict in Syria.
United Nations spokeswoman Khawla Mattar also confirmed that there would be “no other meetings today” in Geneva with de Mistura.
Earlier in the day, the UN envoy held talks with the Damascus government delegation. The meeting came one day after de Mistura announced the beginning of peace talks proper in the Swiss city of Geneva.

Moscow is used to “unsubstantiated claims” coming from Western capitals, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said in a strong response to his British counterpart’s statement that Russia is undermining international peace efforts in Syria.
“Concerning the statements from London and other Western capitals claiming that our Air Force operations in Syria are not contributing to the resolution of the conflict – we are used to such statements. They are completely groundless,” Lavrov said following a meeting with United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Tuesday.
Such statements “reflect the anxiety of our Western partners that our Air Force is operating effectively in Syrian airspace,” he added.

On Monday, the head of the British Foreign Office, Philip Hammond, accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of undermining international efforts to end the Syrian civil war by bombing opponents of President Assad who are countering Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

Those smoking marijuana for years might find their ability to remember words is waning, a new study claims. Five years of smoking weed causes every second person to remember one word fewer from a list of 15, LiveScience reports.
A study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine on February 1 maintains that a longstanding pot habit does not necessarily influence other cognitive or executive functions, be it processing speed, focusing or planning capabilities.
The effects of years-long marijuana consumption has been studied using the existing Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) program, which has over 5,000 adults aged between 18 and 30 enrolled.
The CARDIA program is now 25 years old and, among many others issues, its participants regularly report whether or not they used marijuana over the last month.
On CARDIA’s 25th follow-up, the participants were put through a series of cognitive tests checking their executive function, processing speed and verbal memory.

BERLIN (JTA) — Set amid a 1944 prisoner uprising at Auschwitz, “Son of Saul” stood out as a long shot when its producers first applied for funding from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany. The film’s director, Laszlo Nemes, had no experience with feature films; its lead actor hadn’t been on a film set in 15 years; and its script included long, silent and out-of-focus shots.
But the Claims Conference, which negotiates restitution for Nazi victims, ultimately decided to help bankroll the film. It’s a gamble that now seems prescient, as “Son of Saul” is favored to win best foreign language film at the Oscars on Feb. 28.
Worldwide ticket sales for the Golden Globe-winning film are north of $2 million, already exceeding the film’s slim $1.6 million budget.
“People all over the world are realizing we’re facing the last generation of Holocaust survivors, so we’re in a race against time to cling to the experiences of the survivors still amongst us,” Greg Schneider, the Claims Conference’s vice president, told JTA.
