‘Miracle’ recovery from crash

New images have been released of Hannah Luce, the sole survivor of a horrific plane crash in Kansas last month. “The pain is getting more tolerable and less and less,” her father, Ron Luce, told Matt Lauer on TODAY Monday.

In the recently released images, Hannah can be seen attempting to stand with the aid of a nurse. It is a miraculous recovery for the 22-year-old.

Hannah was one of five aboard a small twin-engine Cessna that went down in a Kansas field on May 11, 2012. The plane hit trouble mid-flight and burst into flames when it crashed, killing everyone on board except Hannah, including the pilot.

Though she didn’t suffer any broken bones or internal bleeding, Hannah did suffer burns over 30 percent of her body. “As a parent you wish so bad you could take that pain for your child, but of course you can’t,“ her father told Lauer.

Part of Hannah’s recovery process has included multiple skin graft surgeries. According to her family, she remembers the crash and was speaking about it just days after it occurred. However, her father says that Hannah is “still piecing together other pieces as she remembers them.”

The group of Oral Robert University students was flying from Tulsa, Okla., to Council Bluffs, Iowa, for a Christian youth rally organized by Teen Mania Ministries, a youth outreach ministry that Hannah’s father founded 25 years ago.

Among the victims in the crash were pilot Luke Sheets, 23, as well as students Garrett Coble, 29, and Stephen Luth, 22. All three died on impact.

Austin Anderson, 27, may have pulled Hannah from the crash. But he later died at the hospital, suffering from burns over 90 percent of his body. A former Marine, he had served twice in Iraq and had just graduated from Oral Roberts.

“I wish all of them would have survived,” Ron Luce told Lauer. “My heart goes out to those families.”

Hannah has now recovered enough that she can be moved from the Kansas hospital where she was being treated to her home state of Texas. She will continue her recovery at a Dallas rehab center, and doctors remain hopeful.

Her father said, “We know there was a miracle that somehow she was rescued in this.”
